Forget everything you thought you knew about unicorns and maidens... A unicorn is not supposed to survive the death of its rider, but Majherri did. Now he is a pariah, mistrusted by the Greater Herd. To reclaim his lost honor and status, he will entrust the remnants of his life to a new human female while unraveling the mystery of his continued existence. Kayleigh Reese is not Battle Maiden material. She's three years older than any other recruit and has enjoyed a peaceful, nomadic life working with her artist mother. The rigors of joining the High-King's elite unicorn cavalry are clearly not for her. Now, with a bond to Majherri, she must overcome her mother's disapproval, the ire of her commanding officer and fellow trainees, and, most importantly, the secrets of her unicorn's past if she is to become a legendary warrior. To prevail, they must quickly come together as a team and unlock the powerful and dangerous magic inside them.

If you don't like rewriting sentences as you read to produce a better experience, this is not the book for you. I really want to give this book more stars, but story ideas only go so far. The writing seems to be done by a middle schooler at best, with poorly worded sentence structure, typos galore, and just bad use of words. I feel like this book could have been so much better if they had just called this version a first draft and gave it a few overhauls. Or at the very least had a halfway decent editor go over it. There were too many places where just a tiny bit of rewording or a bit better paragraph organization would have jumped this book up to a pleasure able read. That being said, if you force your way past the poor writing style, the story is rather good. Not horribly original, but a great story idea. It would mostly appeal to young teens and tweens, but I can't see many of that age group taking the time to fight through the poor writing to appreciate the story.
But if you're willing to spend the time on it and force your way through, you might find you enjoyed this diamond in the rough.

Rider Spirals of Destiny Book 1 eBook Jim Bernheimer Reviews
I am falling in love with the broad range of genres Jim Bernheimer writes. His entry to the Young Adult Fantasy genre has all the fast action and unique world-building I expect, with the adult snarkiness left at the door. The story is a little more simplistic than his other stories, but appropriate for Young Adult.
Loved the elemental magic system and I can't want to see how a sorcerer's training differs from the limited magic done by the Warrior Maidens who ride unicorns.
Some editing needs to be done on the book to clean up typo and grammar errors. The occasional dropping of quotes bugged me, but it did not interfere with my ability to enjoy the story.
The ending is a cliffhanger to go into the next story - so here I am, waiting for the next story ... patiently ... waiting ... If you are not as patient as I am, the fact you can't immediately jump into the next book may bother you. But reading the first book is worth it ... worth the waiting .... patiently ...(tapping toes). His websites says the next one will come out in late 2012. Patiently waiting....
Good book, well written and engaging coming-of-age fantasy. Mr Bernheimer has set up an interesting world (although you dont get to see a lot of the scenery, as most of it is set at the academy) and "magic system", essentially no personal magic, but the ability to borrow an elemental magic from a unicorn, *if* you have the right match between souls. Few girls can bond with a unicorn, and the unicorns cant do their own magic, it's a symbiotic relationship. My biggest complaint is that it ends in a cliffhanger. EDIT the author happened to read my original review and replied that there will be a sequel coming out in summer '13. Mr Bernheimer also gets props for writing a relatable teenaged female going into military service (the main character is 16 and the girls in her class are supposed to be 13 but they all read, to me, to be about 16)
I almost feel like I need to go re-read the book to write a proper review, because so much of what I remember was overshadowed by my shock at the ending and seeming lack of ever finding out what happened.
Anyway. If you liked the "academy years" of the Codex Alera series, you should check this book out. And if youre here after already having bought, read and loved "Rider", check out "Furies of Calderon" (book 1 in the Codex Alera series)
Jim Bernheimer is the kind of author I love to find. His stories are detailed and yet still very accessible. He puts mysteries into his stories, but is not so enamored with his own writing that he adds detail just to make the story longer.
Rider turned out to be a wonderful mystery. You have a girl too old to be chosen by a unicorn paired with a unicorn who mysteriously survived the death of his rider. As they fight their way through training, and the misunderstandings and sometimes open hostility of the other unicorns and riders you find deep personalties and character.
Sadly, this book only contains the first part of the story. Hopefully Jim Bernheimer will not take too long on bringing the tale to an ending. this book doesn't even come to a good midpoint. It just stops with more hanging plot threads than you'd expect.
Interesting magic in this world, if not entirely defined, which allowed Jim to boost one characters power at the expense of making her more than a little unique.
I'm looking forward to book 2, and wondering if the story will be able to maintain the pace and character as it grows. So far its been a surprisingly strong tale. I love the story even if I'm a bit uncertain about a few of the characters. They arne't exactly likable, but you can't quite hate them. It fits the tale, but it definitely aas more thana bit of a disappointment.
So why 5 stars? Becaue with all of that, this story still kept me reading for 3 hours straight as I did all I could to reach the ending. Many of the characters I do like, and the twists in teh story, were fascinating. Jim Bernheimer took a rather standard plot and made something new. I will definitely be reading this again. It's better than the sum of it's parts.
